The Busters may be the most misunderstood generation in recent years. They are considered to be the 13th generation ever to be called “American.” This group consists of those who are now approximately 30-50 years of age and were born between 1961 and 1981. Unlike their “Boomer” predecessors, the Busters are the generation that emerged from a significant birth rate decrease in the population.

One out of every three people in America is a “Boomer”; a part of the age group currently between 49-66 years of age. This generation has been known for its excesses and indulgence, characterized in the Tom Wolfe’s popular novel, The Bonfire of the Vanities. New research in the Associated Press-LifeGoesStrong.com poll reveals that the Boomers are the most obese generation in American history. Some believe that America is now reaping the “rewards” of these excesses, perhaps financially (amidst a recession) and even spiritually.

Just how do we define a “generation”? What is it that distinguishes one from another? According to Larry Richard’s Expository Dictionary of Bible Words, a biblical “generation” can be defined as:
- The span of a single life – from the birth of a person to the birth of his offspring;
- A period of time, past or future or unending;
- A family line traced through history; or, as a …
- A particular group that was alive during a distinctive period of sacred history.
Reading – A Source of Joy.
Joy Reads!
Reading the Scripture can be an incredible source of joy. I enjoy utilizing commentaries and study resources from time to time, but I have found the greatest joy in just sitting back and reading the Word of God. Allowing the mind and heart to get caught up in the truths, the biographies, the adventures, the insights and the promises contained in the Bible is a fountain every Christian should drink from frequently and deeply.
The Psalmist apparently tapped into this source of joy often: “The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart.” (Ps. 19:8a NLT) “I have rejoiced in your decrees as much as in riches.” (Ps. 119:14 NLT) “I rejoice in your word like one who finds a great treasure.” (Ps. 119:162 NLT).
